Abstract

1,208,215. Indicator compositions for aircraft fuel. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 23 April, 1968 [25 May, 1967; 5 March, 1968], No. 19136/68. Heading C4A. [Also in Division G1] The presence of free dispersed water in hydrocarbon fuels is detected by a composition comprising 1 part by weight of fuchsia (otherwise Methylene Violet, i.e. 3-amino-7-(dimethylamino) - 5 - phenylphenazinium chloride), and 20-10,000 parts by weight of anhydrous CaCO 3 , BaCO 3 , BaSO 4 , MgCO 3 or a mixture thereof. The fuchsia may be predominantly of particle size <200 Á, and the inorganic solid <10 Á. The dry solids are blended and may be packed in capsules. The composition is used in an amount 0À05-2 gms./100 ml. of hydrocarbon and detects water with an accuracy of within 5 p.p.m., undergoing a colour change from white to a red-violet whose intensity can be compared with a predetermined standard.
