Abstract
867,402. Thermocouple systems. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, LUCAS, D. H., and PEPLOW, M. E. July 6, 1959 [April 14, 1958], No. 11771/58. Class 40(1). The output of a thermocouple is compensated for variations in temperature at the cold junction by locating this junction in an enclosure together with a resistance network incorporating temperature-sensitive resistors, the network being adjusted to produce a compensating signal which is added to the thermocouple signal to provide a correct indication of temperature. As shown, two thermocouples 12, 13 connected in series have their cold junctions in an enclosure 11 located near to the point whose temperature is to be measured, together with temperaturesensitive resistors 14, 15, e.g. of nickel, associated with other resistors 16-22 which have a low temperature coefficient. Resistors 15, 16+ 17, 19 and 20 form a bridge network, with resistor 14 shunted across 15 and 16, balanceable by potentiometer 18, and energized by a batten 23 through resistors 21, 22. Resistor 21 and potentiometer 18 are adjusted empirically to produce a bridge output signal which is added to the thermocouple output to compensate for variations in temperature in enclosure 11. The enclosure 11 may be of copper, filled with an epoxy resin, and thermally insulated externally.
