Abstract
867,127. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 26, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958], No. 41945/58. Class 39(4). A pressure resisting closure for sealing the refuelling apertures in the pressure vessel of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor consists of a circular plate 1 which is slid into position above the aperture 2 and is forced into sealing engagement with the aperture rim by a series of thrust members 6, 7 arranged in a ring above the sealing region of the plate 1 and which bear against a thrust plate 8 which itself bears against a thrust structure 5. The thrust members 6 consist of threaded rods which are screwed into sleeves 25, the sleeves being externally provided with gear teeth 31 which intermesh with a gear wheel 32 carried on a shaft also carryjng a worm wheel which can be rotated by a shaft 37. Thus rotation of the shaft causes all the members 6 to be simultaneously raised or lowered. To ensure that an evenly distributed pressure is exerted over the whole sealing region of the plate, a closed ring <of pressure pads 15, 16 alternately of arch form and inverted arch form respectively is disposed on the plate 1 above the sealing region. When the closure is to be sealed the extensible members 6 are screwed downwardly, each member bearing on a pad 15 therebelow, this pad pivoting adjacent pads 16 which in turn pivot adjacent pads 15 beneath the members 7. Further downward movement of the members 6 results in the pads being pressed against each other so that the thrust of the members 6 is transmitted to several closely spaced points on the plate 1.
