Abstract

866,991 Manhole covers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: July 8, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 23009/58. Class 107 A manhole cover has a rectangular frame 1 with a continuous plate 2 extending across the frame intermediate its length forming an upper tray which is divided by cross webs 3 into a plurality of cavities 4 which are filled with road surfacing material. Supporting the under surface of the plate are beams 5 which extend longitudinally of the cover. The cross-section of each beam increases in width towards the lower edge of the beam and the depth and width of the beam increases from each end thereof towards the centre. Two cross beams 6 extend below the lower edge of the beams 5 to form rubbing strips 7 which support the cover when removed from its supporting framework. The framework is formed by members 13 and 14 of L-shaped section and internal flanges on members 14 provide a seating for the undersurface 9 of the cover. The cover may be secured to the framework by bolts 12 and the cover may be lifted by keys inserted in the apertures 10.
