Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide is stabilized by the addition of a minor proportion of a water soluble carbocyclic compound the molecule of which possesses a saturated carbocyclic ring system having at least two carbon atoms that are adjacent to one another and are directly linked to N(RCOOM)2 groups; R being an alkylene group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms; M being a cation. The carbocyclic ring system may be a single, saturated hydrocarbon ring containing 4-9 carbon atoms or a fused ring structure containing 7-20 carbon atoms. R is preferably a methylene group as for example in the preferred compound 1,2-diaamino cyclohexane N,N1-tetraacetic acid. The carbocyclic compound may be in the acid form, i.e. M being hydrogen, or in the salt form, M being ammonium, alkaline earth metal, aluminium or zinc or any cation giving a salt which is inert to peroxide particularly a monovalent cation, e.g. an alkali metal ion. The compound may also be part in the acid and part in the salt form. The carbocyclic ring system may also be substituted by other groups, e.g. halogen, alkyl, carbonyl, or carboxyl groups which in turn may also be substited for example by hydroxy, keto, aldehyde, ether, acid or ester groups. The amount of carbocyclic compound employed varies between 1-1000 milligrams preferably between 3-250 milligrams per litre of hydrogen peroxide solution and may be employed in addition to known stabilizers, e.g. pyrophosphates, stannates or nitrates. The Specification contains numerous examples of the stabilizers of the invention.
