Abstract

866,666. Fasteners. BOOTS AIRCRAFT NUT CORPORATION. Jan. 22, 1960, No. 2465/60. Classes 89(1) and 89(2). An insert-fastener comprises a single flatplate 10 having teeth 11 and a screw-thread 19 to receive a screw 32, the side-pieces of the insert being joined by an archedportion 24. The thread 19 is parallel for part of its length and tapered on the portion adjacent the end 24. To secure a plate 33 to a phenolic or like base 15, the insert is entered into a slot 30, Fig. 5, in the base, and the screw is passed through a hole 31 in the base and screwed into the insert, which expands and is secured in the slot by the teeth 11. To obtain a better anchor for the insert, a longer screw is used to compress the end 24, thus moving the teeth 11 further into the base 15, and on further rotation of the screw, the thread on the insert is distorted to grip and lock the screw at 34, 35. In a modification, the insert has additional sinusoidal legs 38, 39, Figs. 8 and 9, bent to form downwardly-extending ends 38a, 39a, each of which has an upset 50 so that after the screw is screwed into the insert to expand the latter, the legs collapse and a plate 42 may be secured to the base 15 and the screw may then be removed. The base has an additional slot 45 for the legs, and the latter may have teeth 52 which grip the walls of the slot.
