Abstract

866,564. Laminates. CAMBRIDGE TILE MANUFACTURING CO. April 15, 1959, No. 12819/59. Class 140. A tile assembly for setting as such in cement or mastic comprises a lattice 11 of fibrous strands having tiles 10 secured thereto in a pattern by a water-resistant elastomer which bonds with cement mortar and is so coated as to leave areas for direct contact between the setting medium and the tiles. Spaces are left between the tiles for grouting. The lattice may be supplied as a web, being coated by a roller coater and pressed by a roller on to tiles assembled continuously on a moving belt, the web then being cut into individual sheets. Alternatively sheets of lattice material may be pressed, as by a foam-rubber covered steel plate, by hand on to tiles assembled on the frame of a sloping mounting board, the foam-rubber surface being protected from the adhesive by a membrane of P.T.F.E. The assemblies are then dried and cured, and cooled, in successive hot and cold air chambers. The adhesive used may be polyvinyl acetate containing a small proportion of melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, or phenol-formaldehyde resin, or may be a polyacrylic, neoprene latex, natural rubber latex, reclaim rubber emulsion or a solution of a resinous material in an organic solvent. The strands of the lattice may comprise twisted kraft or other paper, preferably flattened in the plane of the lattice and stiffened with a size similar to the adhesive used. Alternatively the strands may be of natural, synthetic or glass fibres. The lattice may be a plain weave or may have leno-woven threads at intervals.
