Abstract

866,505. Moulding rubber soles on to footwear uppers. LAMBERT HOWARTH & SONS Ltd. Jan. 13, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37200/59. Class 87(2). A mould for the manufacture of footwear having a sponge rubber sole on the under surface of which is a relatively thin skin of prevulcanised rubber, the sole being expanded and vulcanised and adhered to the. skin and upper by applied heating, comprises a base A on which rests a ring B formed of two .parts, hinged together at one end and with a clamp at the opposite end, and provided at its base with an inwardly extending lip b which slopes downwards to a thin edge b<SP>2</SP>, the skin being placed in position in the mould so as to extend a short distance over the edge of the lip b. The lip b gradually merges into the inner face b<SP>1</SP> of the ring B and may be formed integral with the ring B as shown in Fig. 2 or a plate B<SP>1</SP> on which the lip b is formed may be secured to the underside of the ring B as shown in Fig. 6. The use of the mould not only prevents the formation of flash but also produces a shallow recess around the edge of the sole thus reducing the thickness of the sole at the parts where the least amount of wear occurs.
