Abstract

866,284. Selective printing. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. Dec. 16, 1958 [Nov. 11, 1957], No. 35108/57. Class 100(4) A high-speed rotary printing machine comprises a type drum 1 containing a plurality of type wheels 2, means for generating signals to mark instantaneous angular positions of the drum, a hammer 15 for each type wheel and which is coupled to a drive means when its electromagnet 18 is energised in response to further signals generated under control of generated signals and of character input signals: the hammers operate to press paper 13 and inkribbon 14 against the character on wheel 2. The print drum 1 is mounted on a shaft 3 driven step-by-step by a Geneva mechanism 10-12 one character for each revolution of a drive shaft 7 driven from an electric motor 8. The shaft 3 also drives a rotary brush 24 over a fixed commutator 23 to generate the signals to mark angular positions of the drum 1. These generated signals, or those from a separate pulse generator prepare a calculating machine to readout the information stored in a counter. After the movement of the drum 1 and brush 24 through a start position which initiates the read out, a series of ten generated pulses, and a stop pulse, the counter emits the further signals which are amplified and then applied to the hammer control magnets 18. Hammer impression arrangements. The electromagnets 18 selected by the further signals release a latch 17 from a notch 19 in the hammer 15 which thereupon drops against a stop 20 to be thrown upwardly, to effect impression by a pin 22 on a wheel 21 driven by the shaft 7.
