Abstract
1,244,251. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 7 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 859/69. Heading B6F. A drum printer includes a shaft 10 driven continuously by a motor 12, a harmonic torsional oscillation being superimposed on the continuous drive so that a drum 28r rotates stepwise. The torsional oscillation is provided by a rotor 36 mounted on the shaft 10, and a stator 38, an alternating magnetic retarding and accelerating force being applied to the rotor. The alternating magnetic force is synchronized with the natural frequency of torsional oscillation of the shaft 10, the flux in the stator 38 being detected by a coil 42 and a point in the resulting waveform being measured and applied through transistorized control means to vary the torque output of the motor 12. The shaft 10 carries two print drums 28l, 28r each being attached to one end of the shaft 10 and the drive being applied to the centre of the shaft, the oscillations of the two halves of the shaft being 180 degrees out of phase to balance out torsional forces at the centre. Printing is effected by hammers 29 normally held against bias by springs 31 by means of a holding magnet 33, control magnets 27 being energized to oppose the holding magnet for impression action.
