Abstract

865,936. Suction hoods. PANGBORN CORPORATION. Dec. 14, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 42372/59. Class 8(2). A suction hood for open-top electrical furnaces having removable roofs 5, provided with heating electrodes 9, comprises a junction box 15 for mounting at a top portion of the furnace periphery, the box 15 being adapted for connection to a suction source and to a ring shaped conduit 25 adapted to be positioned around the remainder of the furnace top periphery having ports 26 for applying suction at selected positions around the top of the furnace. An electrode manifold hood portion 40, for mounting on the furnace roof in electrode encircling arrangement has an extension 42 having an adjustable arm 44 to open a door 45 biased to close by a spring 47, to automatically establish a suction connection between the box 15 and the manifold 40 when the roof 5 is in place over the furnace body F. In an alternative form of the invention the ring conduit is fastened to the furnace roof 5 and communicates with box 15 via the manifold 40 to which it is connected by rib conduits ; thus on raising the roof 5 only the distribution box 15 remains in situ. Hoods for the fnrnace spouts may be connected to the conduit 25.
