[Also in Group X] An iris-diaphragm valve has a supporting spider 25, 27 on each side for preventing distortion and collapse of the blades 13 by a pressure difference in either direction. Each spider partially overlies the area controlled by the diaphragm and consists of radial parts 25 bridged by parts 27 which are curved about a centre other than that of the controlled area so that the blades, as they pass over the parts 27, do not tend to jam.
