Abstract

865,190. Pile driving. MULLER, L., GEIL, H., and SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H., C. June 26, 1957 [June 27, 1956; Sept. 24, 1956], No. 20179/57. Class 68(2). Equipment . for driving steel, and timber, sheet and like piles comprises means, such as a vibratory ram 9, Fig. 3, adapted to be attached to the head of the pile 41 and comprising synchronously rotating out-of-balance weights 15 or a monkey 33, Fig. 7, slidably mounted on a frame 31 of the equipment, for subjecting the pile to dynamic forces, spring means, such as springs 18, 38<SP>1</SP>, and means for applying to the pile, through the intermediary of the spring means, static forces of a magnitude that can be controllably varied while the equipment is in operation. As shown in Fig. 7, static forces are applied to the pile 41 through a dolly 40 adjustable during pile driving by ropes 36 clamped at 37 to the springs 38<SP>1</SP> in casings, 38 attached through tie bolts 39 to the dolly 40. As shown in Fig. 3, the pile driving equipment, including the vibratory ram 9, is suspended from the hook 17 of a crane or the like and static forces are supplied by plates 19 - 22, loosely inter-connected as shown in Fig. 4, the uppermost plate 22 being attached to ropes 16 which can be wound on and off pulleys 27 to raise or lower the plates 19 - 22 on to springs 18 in succession. The plates may be replaced by a water tank, with outlet and inlet pipes, resting on the springs 18. In a further embodiment (not shown), where the vibratory ram is supported by a pile driving frame, a yoke slidably mounted on the frame and bearing on springs on the ram is adjustable by a cable mounted on pulleys on the driving frame. Shock-absorbing elements prevent the oscillatory movement of the ram from being transmitted to the cable. The apparatus may also be used for withdrawing piles.
