Abstract

864,581. Docks. COMECA S. A. Sept. 2, 1959 [Dec. 3, 1958], No. 29889/59. Class 68(2). A drydock 1 comprises side walls 1 and 2 defining a slip 3 into which a ship is floated and a floor 4 movable vertically between the walls. Each of the side walls is supported from the ground on a series of piers 5 which define alcoves 9, which house part of the floor-elevating mechanism. The floor 4 is composed of a plurality of linked beams 10 and floor sections 11 and each beam can be raised and lowered by hoisting mechanism 12. Each mechanism comprises a synchronous motor 22 driving a drum 21 on which is wound a cable 16, which passes over multiple grooved pulleys 15 and 17 connected to the beam 10 and the pier 5 respectively. By operating the motors independently the shape of the floor can be made to correspond with the shape of the keel of a ship to be docked and subsequent simultaneous operation of the motors enables the ship to be raised bodily. Each of the beams carries a pair of bilge blocks 29 and each block is adjustable transversely of the dock by a chain 30, which is driven by the sprocket 31. A shaft 34 passes through the sprocket and carries a bevel gear 36 which meshes with a gear 37, driven by a handwheel 38. As a beam 10 is raised or lowered the sprockets 31 on it slide on the shaft 34. In a modification (not shown - see Figs. 7-9) only a single wall is provided. and skeleton framework is used to support the mechanism for the other side of the platform. Only four hoists are provided, one at each corner and the platform has rails to accommodate a boat-supporting dolly.
