Abstract
864,470. Valves. HARTLEYS (STOKEON-TRENT) Ltd. Oct. 28, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 34944/58. Class 135. [Also in Group I] A number of sludge inlet pipes 11, 12, 13 and 14, radially arranged 90 degrees apart are connected to a cylindrical housing 15, from which four outlets from the housing 15 are similarly set 90 degrees apart round the cylindrical wall of the housing. The incoming flow enters the housing through a single inlet pipe 16, in one end of the housing. A spindle 17 extends axially through the opposite end of the housing and is carried in a bearing 18 fitted with suitable packing material 19, and an end collar 20. The projecting end of the spindle is fitted with a pulley 21 or other driving member operated by a belt or V-rope or some other means from a reduction gear and small electric motor or other prime mover not shown in the Figures. Within the housing a valve member 25 is mounted on the spindle and is a close working fit in the housing. The valve member 25 has a passage 26 in one end which is permanently open to the inlet flow from the pipe 16. It also has an opening in its periphery communicating with each of the several pipes 11, 12, 13 and 14 in turn in the cylindrical wall of the housing. As shown in Fig. 3 the valve has its peripheral opening 27 almost fully in register with the pipe 14 and it will begin to uncover the pipe 12 before the pipe 14 is shut off. The speed of rotation of the valve member is very slow, possibly of the order of one revolution in half an hour.
