864,425. Gear - cutting; gear - grinding. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 30, 1958 [Oct. 2, 1957], No. 30890/57. Class 83 (3). Gear-forming apparatus comprises a gearprofile generator 22, means 4 for continuously rotating a gear-blank 1 and for simultaneously imparting, or tending to impart, linear movement to the generator in one direction, and separate drive-means 6 which impart linear movement in the opposite direction and are operated intermittently to position the generator to form properly-indexed tooth profiles. The motor 6 rotates a splined shaft 5 engaging a gear 15, and the motor 4 rotates a lead-screw 3 engaging an externally-toothed nut 7 in the tool-slide 10, which carries a plane-sided rotary cutter or grinding-wheel. When the carriage 10 reaches the end of a stroke, it operates a switch causing the motor 6 to be operated to rotate the gear 15 in such a direction as to cause the movement of the carriage 10 to be reversed. When a predetermined number of revolutions of the shaft 5 has been made, selsyns 16, 18, operate to stop the motor 6 with the cutter in the correct position ready to operate in another tooth-space. In modifications, the positions of the splined shaft and screw are interchanged, or two screws are employed which both mesh with a wormwheel attached to the carriage. Curved or straight-toothed bevel or spur-gears may be produced. Specifications 789,242 and 825,833 are referred to.
