Abstract

789,242. Gear-cutting. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 16, 1956 [July 27, 1955], No. 21727/55. Class 83 (3). Apparatus for cutting involute helical gears comprises means 3 which rotates a blank 1 and is geared to a lead-screw 6, a cutter 8 on a carriage 7 having a split-nut engaging the screw, means for engaging and disengaging the nut, and indicating-means 10 to ensure correct engagement between the nut and the leadscrew. The carriage 7 carries a slide 9 on which is adjustably mounted a profiled cutter or a pair of flat-faced cutters 8 which operate on opposite sides of a tooth. In operation, with the work rotating continuously, the carriage 7 is traversed upwardly by engaging the split-nut when an indicator on the disc 10 driven by the screw co-incides with an indicator 11 fixed on the carriage. At the end of a stroke the cutters are retracted, the split-nut is disengaged, and the carriage 7 is returned by a rack-and-pinion or hydraulic ram. A second traverse is initiated when the indicator 10 is again in its zero-position. To ensure a predetermined cutting- schedule, and complete the cutting of a gear having 363 teeth in ten revolutions thereof, the indicator 10 may drive another indicator at onetenth its speed and the nut then be engaged when both indicators are zero. The indicators may operate electrical or hydraulic circuits to actuate the nut and the cutter-slides, the contacts between the indicators 10, 11 being slightly offset from their theoretical position to allow for the time-actuation of the nut.
