An animal trap comprises two frame members 10 and 11 having their end members 18 and 26 pivoted to each other so as to be rotatable about a common axis, and a spring 13 having at its ends two ring members 32 and 33 adapted to engage the end members 18 and 26 of the frames one on each side of the common axis. The action of the spring 13 is such as to force the ring members 32 and 33 apart, thereby pivoting the frame members to their " spring " position and trapping an animal. The trap is held in its " set " position by a detent 12 comprising a first trigger member 34 and a second such member 35. The first member 34 comprises a closed loop 40 threaded over the frame 11, and a closed hook 37 which is hooked over the frame member 10 when the trap is in its " set " position. The second trigger member comprises a portion 36 threaded through the closed hook 37, and a depending bar 41, the portion 36 being placed between the frame member 10 and the member 34 as shown in Fig. 4, with the result that when an animal interferes with the bar 41, the portion 36 prises the hook 37 off the frame member 10 and the trap is released. The member 39 of the detent, when positioned as shown in Fig. 4, prevents the movement of the hook 37 away from the frame member 10 and therefore serves as a safety device.
