Abstract

The invention comprises: 6-acetyl-7,8-dihydro-3-enthylmorphine and its acid addition salts; the preparation thereof by treating 7,8-dihydro-3-ethylmorphine with an acetylating agent, or by hydrogenating 6-acetyl-3-ethylmorphine, and in either case, if desired, converting the product to an acid addition salt thereof; and pharmaceutical compositions containing the product (see Group VI). 7,8-Dihydro-3-ethylmorphine is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of 3-ethylmorphine hydrochloride in the presence of platinum oxide. 6-Acetyl-3-ethylmorphine is prepared by acetylation of ethylmorphine with acetic anhydride.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 6-acetyl - 7,8 - dihydro - 3 - ethylmorphine or an acid addition salt thereof and a pharmaceutical carrier. Examples describe tablets, a cough syrup and cough drops containing the bitartrate of the base. Other salts specified are the hydrohalides, phosphate and perchlorate.
