Abstract

Apparatus for the continuous treatment of fibres with organic gaseous material is characterized in that a gas seal forming device is provided respectively at a fibre inlet portion and an outlet portion, said device being arranged to prevent reaction gas escaping from a reaction zone by pressing an inert gas which does not participate in the reaction into the said device under pressure. As shown in Fig. 1 endless conveyers 1 and 2 move around wheels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 9 and 91, 101, 11, 12 respectively. Fibre inlet and outlet portions 17, 18 are located at the ends of charging and discharging portions 14, 16 themselves separated by reaction zone 15. Inlet and outlet portions 17, 18 are each provided with a gas seal forming means 20 cylindrical and rectangular examples of which are shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Sleeve chambers 21, 22 are located around the <PICT:0863219/IV(c)/1> <PICT:0863219/IV(c)/2> <PICT:0863219/IV(c)/3> whole of the periphery of inlet and outlet portions 17, 18 and inlet holes 23, 24 and slits 25, 26 permit passage of inert gas e.g. nitrogen or air supplied under pressure to the sleeve chamber and thence into inlet and outlet portions 17, 18 thus preventing escape of reaction gas e.g. acetic anhydridevapour. Reaction zone 15 is provided with a device 31 e.g. a blower for circulating reaction gas which is exhausted through pipe 33 and re-enters through pipe 34, and slits 321 and 322 through which reaction gas is ejected on to the fibres to be treated. Inlet 35 feeds reaction gas from a reaction gas generator while outlet 36 permits escape of waste reaction gas whereupon the latter is condensed, distilled and regenerated and returned to the generator. Horizontal apparatuses (not shown) similar in construction to the vertical apparatus above are also described.
