Abstract

A submerged arc welding flux is made by mixing the dry constituent powders of the flux with water or other liquid in the presence of a binder to produce a crumbly mass, forcing the crumbly mass through a sieve of 5-20 mesh B.S. to form granules and then firing the granules at a temperature below their fusion temperature. The binder, which acts as a granulating agent only and does not promote bonding of the particles within the granules when they are fired, may be organic e.g. gum acacia, gum karaya, gum tragacanth, lignin, tannin, a water-soluble cellulose derivative such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, dextrin, starch, sugar, molasses, flour or a pitch or bitumen product; and/or inorganic e.g. a salt of zinc, lead or cadmium, or a chloride, fluoride or carbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. Firing is effected at 800 DEG -1300 DEG C. in a fixed or rotating kiln. Flux constituents disclosed are manganese ore, sand, carbon, calcined fireclay, alumina, ground glass, woolastonite, olivine, ferrosilicon, silicomanganese and potassium silicate.
