Abstract
862,972. Electric measuring and control systems. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. March 21, 1957 [March 23, 1956], No. 9066/56. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XXII and XL (b)] In a machine tool such as a lathe in which the tool is controlled from a coded record, excessive wear of the tool is detected by a vibration detector resting on the cutting-tool, or by a stylus resting on the machined workpiece, or by a differential photo-cell arrangement comparing the light reflected from the machined workpiece with that from a standard workpiece. The detectors produce an increased output with tool wear, which, after amplification and rectification operates a thyratron or other relay to energize an alarm circuit, and initiate means for automatically replacing the worn tool and repositioning it relative to the workpiece. The thyratron or relay is delayed from returning to its normal condition for a predetermined time. If another fault signal is received during this delay a further alarm is operated and the machine stopped. Specifications 841,682, 860,255, 860,256 and 860,257 are referred to.
