Abstract

862,893. Load-engaging devices for lifting. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. Aug. 11, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 15279/58. Class 78 (4). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIII] A load-sustaining means for aircraft capable of hovering comprises a coupling body 1, Fig. 2, attached to the aircraft, a catch 11 engaging a detachable centre 10, the detachable centre having load-carrying attachment means and retainer means for an engagement cable 8, said cable passing through the coupling body and having hauling means. The cable 8 may be attached to the detachable centre 10 by a cable retainer 9 having fingers 16 which engage the detachable centre 10. A load may be attached to the detachable centre 10 by a member 35. In operation, the load, the detachable centre 10 and the cable retainer 9 are drawn up into the body 1 where catch 11 engages below a shoulder 23. The cable 11 continues to draw the detachable centre 10 up until a reduced bore in the body 1 acts upon projections 21 of fingers 16 causing release of engagement cable retainer 9 from detachable centre 10, the latter returning on to the loadsustaining catch 11. In a modification, the cable 8 is retained within the detachable centre 10 by balls 24, Fig. 3. When an outer sleeve 28 is raised relatively to an inner sleeve 26 the balls 24 can move inwardly so that detachment of the engagement cable retainer from the detachable centre 10 can take place. When release catch 11 permits the dropping of the detachable centre 10, contact is made between the upper portion of a member 33 and a shoulder 34 on sleeve 28, causing the cable 8 to be released from the detachable centre 10. If, however, it is desired to lower the detachable centre 10 by the cable 8, then member 33 is pulled out of engagement, so permitting the lowering of the load-carrying mechanism by winch action. In the latter case, the load is limited by slipping of the winch. The detachable centre 10 may be released electrically, manually or by the touch-down of the load when the aircraft hovers over the ground. In a further embodiment, the engagement cable retainer device is similar to that described with reference to Fig. 3, but the detachable centre instead of having provision for a hook has at its lower ends means for securing it to a length of hose (see Group XXXIII).
