Abstract

862,761. Aerating sewage. AMES CROSTA MILLS & CO. Ltd., and BOLTON, J. F. March 28, 1958 [April 5, 1957 ; Oct. 8, 1957 ; Feb. 11, 1958], Nos. 11107/57, 31388/57 and 4344/58. Class 111. [Also in Group II] Apparatus for the surface aeration of sewage in a tank by means of a ring of blades partially immersed therein and rotated about a vertical axis so that liquid is centrifugally discharged over the outer periphery of a truncated inverted cone embracing the ring of blades, is characterized in that each of the resultant streams of liquid, after passing beyond the cone, impinges upon or flows over a separate surface or surfaces so arranged that each stream is effectively diffused in atmosphere before falling back into the tank. In Fig. 1 a truncated cone 10 having its lip slightly above the liquid surface 12 in tank 13 is fitted with longitudinally-curved internal blades 11 rotated by driving rings 22 and 24, an annular shroud member 25 being attached to either of rings 22 or 24 (left and right hand sides of the Figure, respectively). The stream of liquid is diffused by the shroud, especially if its outer part is formed into teeth and/or vanes 26. In modifications of Fig. 1 the shroud 25 dips into the liquid, or the teeth or vanes do not form part of a shroud attached to a driving ring but depend downwardly or downwardly and outwardly into or just above the liquid surface from a ring attached to the underside of the structure 18. In another modification the teeth or vanes are formed in the edges of upward and outward extensions of the blades, and the cone may carry, and rotate with, a dependant cylindrical neck and/or flared skirt in accordance with divided Specification 862,762.- In all the above embodiments the lower edge of the cone 10 may make an airtight junction at 14 with the top of a stationary uptake tube 15 supported clear of the tank at its bell-mouthed end 16 by legs 17. In Fig. 5 the truncated cone 30 is stationary, has no internal blades and is united to the upper end of a cylindrical or frusto-conical uptake member 31. Blades 33 are carried on an inverted conical shroud 34 fixed to the driving ring, the blades having slight radial clearance from the interior of cone 30. Liquid is discharged on to a ring of vanes 36 fixed to the lip of the cone 30. In another modification the blades 33 are connected to, and rotate with, cone 30 and shroud 34, and the blades have toothed extensions, the vanes 36 being dispensed with.
