Abstract
Water-soluble co-ordination complexes of trivalent chromium and polymers of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, or of esters thereof which are saponifiable in the polymerized condition and have been at least partly saponified, may be prepared by reacting the polymers with salts of trivalent chromium. The acid may be maleic, fumaric, itaconic ethacrylic, methacrylic, a -chloracrylic, furylacrylic or crotonic acid, and specified esters are esters of the above acids with aliphatic alcohols containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The polymers may be derived from additional comonomers, e.g. conjugated dienes, vinyl esters, vinyl alkyl ketones, olefins, vinyl aromatic compounds, esters, amides and nitriles of unsaturated acids, vinyl and vinylidene halides, and vinyl heterocyclic compounds, many examples being listed. Examples describe the preparation of suitable polymers by saponifying a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and t-butyl acrylamide, by saponifying polyethyl acrylate; and by copolymerizing stearyl methacrylate and acrylic acid; vinyl acetate and acrylic acid; styrene and acrylic acid; hexyl methacrylate, styrene and acrylic acid; ethyl acrylate, vinylidene chloride and acrylic acid; ethyl acrylate, methyl vinyl ketone and acrylic acid; vinyl acetate and crotonic acid; methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid; ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid; and ethyl acrylate, t. butyl acrylamide and acrylic acid. Polymerization may be effected in solution in an aliphatic alcohol containing up to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. isopropanol, in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide, acetyl benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, t. butyl hydroperoxide, acetone peroxide and cyclohexanone peroxide. The preferred chromium salt is the chloride or basic chloride. The products may be used for coating metals, cellulose films, paper, textile fibres and fabrics, and as bonding and sizing agents for glass fibres in the manufacture of fibre-reinforced plastics and laminates.
