Abstract

A magnetic data-recording tape comprises a leader strip of polymeric material which is coated with copper and/or silver by simultaneously spraying thereon a metal salt solution and a reducing solution. The strip may be composed of cellulose triacetate, polyethylene terephthalate, a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, a polycarbonate or a polyalkylene, and, as described, is coated with a resinous binding layer (see Group III) before metallizing. In the examples, metallizing is effected using: (1), (2) and (3), aqueous solutions of dihydrazine sulphate and silver nitrate + ammonium hydroxide; (4) aqueous solutions of formaldehyde and cuprous nitrate + ammonium hydroxide; and (5) aqueous solutions of formaldehyde and silver nitrate + cuprous nitrate + ammonium hydroxide. Reference is also made to hydroxylamine as a suitable reducing agent.
