861,594. Magnetic compositions. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 32579/58. Class 38 (2). Ferrite cores 4 formed by compacting powdered metal oxides are sintered in a platinum vessel 3 covered with a platinum lid 2 to prevent volatilization of metals from the green core. A quantity of the ferrite powder 5 may be included in the vessel. The sintering period may be from ¢ to 3 hours at temperatures between 1000 and 1500‹ C. in air. Cooling may take place in two stages, furnace cooling for a period of 10-45 minutes followed by quenching to room temperature. The precise times and temperatures for sintering and cooling are given for the various examples disclosed which include ferrites of the following mol. percentage compositions : 15ZnO, 35 MnO, 50 Fe 2 O 3 ; 15-20 CdO, 35-50 MnO, 35-45 Fe 2 O 3 ; 10 ZnO, 50 MnO, 40 Fe 2 O 3 ; 12 CdO, 33 NiO, 55 Fe 2 O 3 ; 13.8 ZnO, 20.7 MnO, 27.6 MgO, 37.9 Fe 2 O 3 . In each case a comparative sample made in an open boat was made and the physical properties, e.g. switching times, were compared. Tables indicating the volatilization losses in a sample having the composition Fe 1.5 Mn 0.6 Zn 0.6 Mg 0.3 O 4 are given.
