861,099. Screw jacks. PLISCHKE, W., and STORZ, M., [trading as STORZ, O.H.G., E. A.]. July 22, 1958 [July 25, 1957; June 18, 1958], No. 23488/58. Class 78 (3)., In a screw-and-nut vehicle jack in which a lifting arm is pivoted to the nut, the screw is rotatably mounted on a base-plate by means of a ball-and-socket bearing, and the thrust of the screw is applied to the ball or the socket of the bearing through antifriction members. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the screw shaft 10 is secured to a ball 25 supported in a socket 20 and is retained therein by a flange 34. A portion 26 of ball 25 is of smaller diameter than the rest of the ball and is provided with a recess 30 containing a ball 31 which bears on a bearing cup 21 in the socket 20. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the screw shaft 10 is rotatably retained by means of a splitring 46, in a recess 41 in a ball 40 which is mounted in a socket 20 in the base 13, the end of the shaft 10 bearing against a ball 42. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ball of the ball-and-socket joint is provided with a stepped recess, the shaft 10 being retained in the wider bore, as in the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, and bearing against the upper one of two balls in the narrower bore. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the shaft 10 passes through a bore 27 in a ball 35, the lower portion of the ball being cut away as shown, and the lower end of the shaft being provided with a recess 71 for a bearing ball 75. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the ball 75 is replaced by a domed bearing member fitting in a tapered recess in the end of the screw shaft.
