Abstract

A process for the separation of carbon dioxide from a mixture of gases comprising at least one gas of lower boiling-point than carbon dioxide, wherein said mixture of gases is contacted in an absorption zone with an organic liquid absorbent, which preferentially absorbs carbon dioxide at an elevated pressure and at a temperature below about 40 DEG F. (5 DEG C.), to effect substantially complete absorption of said carbon dioxide without substantial absorption of gases of lower boiling-point than carbon dioxide; withdrawing from said absorption zone enriched absorbent containing absorbed carbon dioxide, reducing the pressure of said enriched absorbent from within the range of 200-1000 pounds per square inch gauge (14-70 kgms. per square cm. gauge) to not above 50 pounds per square inch gauge (3.5 kgms. per square cm. gauge) and thus effecting temperature reduction and release of at least a part of the absorbed carbon dioxide; removing carbon dioxide, employing the expanded liquid absorbent as a refrigerant and then re-using the absorbent. The mixture of gases may be chilled to a temperature below the dew point of carbon dioxide in said mixture at said elevated pressure to effect condensation of at least a portion of the carbon dioxide. Absorbents specified are butane, pentane, isopentane, hexanes, heptanes, light distillate fractions having atmospheric boiling-ranges lying within the range of 100 DEG to 500 DEG F., gasoline and light naphthas.
