Abstract

In a process for separating gases from gaseous mixtures wherein a solid adsorbent is passed down a vertical column in countercurrent with the gas mixture through an adsorption zone, a fractionating zone, and a desorption zone, the desorption pressure of each substance adsorbed by the adsorbent is lowered by cooling the adsorbent when entering or in the fractionation zone to a value lower than the desorption pressure on charging the adsorbent to equilibrium in the adsorption zone. The adsorption zone may also be cooled. As described in Specification 703,162, the adsorbent may be undercharged in the adsorption zone, or the adsorption zone may be larger in cross-section than the other zones when the gas mixture contains only a small concentration of the gases to be separated. Fractions containing ethane and ethylene in high concentration may be obtained by contacting a hydrocarbon mixture with active carbon.
