Abstract
In a process for separating gases from gaseous mixtures wherein a solid adsorbent is passed through a vertical column in contact with the gas mixture through an adsorption zone, a fractionating zone and a desorption zone, the desorption pressure of each substance adsorbed by the absorbent is lowered in the adsorption zone to a value lower than the desorption pressure on charging the adsorbent to equilibrium in the adsorption zone. Lowering of the desorption pressure may be effected by undercharging the adsorbent in the adsorption zone. When the gas mixture contains only a small concentration of the gases to be separated, the adsorption zone may be larger in cross-section than the other zones. Apparatus is shown in which the enlarged adsorption zone is either at the top or bottom of the column. The separation may be carried out under pressure, and the expansion of the fractions removed may then be used for cooling purposes. The gas mixture may pass transversely to the flow of adsorbent. Fractions containing ethane and ethylene in high concentration may be obtained by contacting a hydrocarbon mixture with active carbon. Specification 703,230 is referred to.
