Abstract

Impurities are separated from hydrocarbons by passing a liquid stream containing the hydrocarbons and the impurities through a bed of silica gel at 0-300 DEG F., and desorbing the silica gel with a gaseous desorbing agent at 400-800 DEG F. Suitable displacing agents include sulphur dioxide, ammonia, amines, halogenated hydrocarbons, glycols, esters, nitromethane, and carbon dioxide. Preferably the silica gel has pore diameters of 51-300 <\>rA. An alumina or silica gel guard bed may be provided. The process is especially valuable for removing olefines from n-paraffins.
