860,614. Flexible shafts. JOSUTIS, W., and KIRCHER, M., [trading as COPEX-APPARATEBAU]. Sept. 23, 1957 [Sept. 28, 1956; Feb. 18, 1957], No. 29879/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] The ends only or the entire length of a hollow flexible coiled wire shaft have or has a square, triangular, hexagonal, rectangular or other polygonal internal cross-section for slidably receiving complementary terminals 19, 22 on the driving and driven shafts 18, 24. In Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the hollow shaft is wound from rectangular or square wire on a square-sectioned expanding mandrel the stranding being continuous with oppositely handed successive layers 14 ... 17. Where only the ends have a square section a circular sectioned shaft is wound in a continuous length on an automatic spring-coiling machine and spaced square portions to form individual shaft ends are then cold-pressed on an hydraulic press having jaws which permit a gradual change from the circular to square shape. The shaft is then cut into lengths through the centres of the square ports. The ends of the shaft are spot-welded (Fig. 8, not shown), to secure the individual coils and surface ground. The drive connection may be strengthened by forming the shaft 24 with an external socket 23 in addition to the internal plug 22, which latter is formed on a square head 20 pinned in a complementary socket in the shaft port 24.
