In a machine for making paper, paper-board, or asbestos-cement, a wire-cloth 3 travels around a stationary framework 2 in a vat 1 to which pulp is fed through an inlet 7 and optionally through a counter-current inlet 8. The framework 2 has freely rotatable rollers 14 extending between end-plates which, with the wire-cloth 3 form an enclosure exhausted of air by a pipe 19 and of white water by a pipe 20. The web is supported over a suction box 4 by rolls 41, and is couched on to a make-up roll section 45, the formed board being cut off when the required thickness is attained. The rollers 14 have helical ribs, e.g. of opposite hand, to aid in moving white water from the middle to the ends. A groove may be cut in the crests of the ribs to receive a metal wire or rubber cord. Adjustable water-jets may be fitted internally of the framework 2 and be directed outwardly to divide the web into two or more longitudinal strips. In a modification, three rolls at the top of the framework 2, with the wire looped round them, and a couch roll above them, form a suction enclosure. There may be a succession of such vat assemblies. The wire-cloth 3 may be cleaned by a waterspray.
