Class 100(1) Sheet separators:-Carton blanks in a stack 10 in a magazine 12 are separated sequentially from the top of the stack by suction means, and means for preventing separation of more than one blank at a time comprises a needle 58 which is urged downwardly to penetrate a number of the uppermost blanks in the stack adjacent the rear marginal edges thereof whereby separation of the top blank effects tearing of the rear edge thereof from the hold of the needle, the needle being rotated on its axis to effect deeper penetration thereof into the stack without excessive pressure. The needle 58 is secured to a rod 60 slidably mounted in a sleeve 66 having screw-thread engagement with a fixed bar 70 on the magazine 12, and a spring 72 is arranged between shoulders on the rod and sleeve to urge the needle downwardly to penetrate the top blanks. The needle rod 60 is oscillated by the suction pipe 26 carrying the suction separators, through a system of levers 78, 82, 84 connecting the rod and pipe. The suction pipe 26 is carried by a parallel linkage operated from a carton forming machine through connections including a camoperated linkage 32 and intermeshing semental gears 34, 36, whereby the top blank is presented to feed rollers 18, 20. The blank is then fed past a rotary adhesive-applying mechanism 14 to a second pair of feed rollers 40, 42, which feed the blank over a support to carton folding mechanism.
