859,647. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 28, 1959 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 34099/58. Class 122 (5). In a shaft seal for a gas-filled machine, for example, a hydrogen-cooled alternator, in which a sealing liquid is caused to flow between cooperating sealing surfaces on a collar 2 fixed to the shaft 1 and a sealing member 7, the sealing surfaces extend axially and are arranged so that the flow of sealing liquid towards the inboard or machine-interior end of the seal is opposed by centrifugal action. Tapered sealing surfaces 3, 4 on the collar 2 co-operate with similar sealing surfaces 5, 6 on the member 7 which is slidable in a housing 8 but prevented from rotation by a pin 9 and sealing oil is supplied to the co-operating surfaces 3, 5 and 4, 6 from a chamber 12 fed through ducts 13 from an oilpressure chamber 14. Oil flowing to each side of the seal between the sealing surfaces is opposed by centrifugal action. The thrust on the member 7 is determined by the gas pressure in the machine and the oil pressure in chamber 14 and, if desired, the force in the inboard direction may be augmented by springs 18. The sealing surfaces on the inboard and outboard sides of the seal may be respectively radially and axially disposed.
