[Also in Group XXV] A web tensioning buckle comprises a crank arm 33, a ratchet wheel 42, intermittent rotation of which is effected by oscillation of the crank arm, web connection means 13 located at one end of the buckle and adapted to receive a web 11 and rotatable with the ratchet wheel to wind up the web when received on such means and means 20 at the other end of the buckle for coupling to a tension receiving member 10. The buckle comprises a frame 12 and the means 20 is a hook. The web connection means 13 consists of a pair of plates 28 arranged in parallel relation and between which the end of the web 11 is passed, the plates being carried by discs 31 (not shown) which rotatably fit into holes in the side arms 21 of the frame. The arm 33 is rotatable around discs 39 (not shown) carried by the plates 28. The arm 33 carries a pawl frame 36 by means of pivots 47a and the pawl frame at one end is provided with drive pawls 47 which engage the teeth of a pair of said ratchet wheels 42 which are carried by the plates 28. The arm 33 is lockable in a non-operative position by a releasble latch means 15. Reverse movement of the web connection means 13 is prevented by dogs 55 which are part of a plate 56 carried by the frame 12 and longitudinally movable in slots 25. The dog plate is loaded into engagement with the ratchet wheels by a spring 57. The pawls are biased into engagement with the ratchet wheels by a spring 53 trapped between the pawl frame and a bracket 50 carried by the arm 33. The latch means 15 comprises a spring biased latch 59 which is slidably mounted in the open end of the hook 20 and which snaps over the end of the arm 33. Manual retraction of the latch releases the arm. To enable the tension in the web to be released, projections 61 are provided on the arm which when the arm is moved beyond its normal range of movement engages the dogs 55 and releases these from the ratchet wheels ; when the pawls are released from the ratchet wheels by depression of the pawl plate the means 13 is released and can rotate in the opposite direction to relieve tension in the web.
