Abstract

915,375. Toothed gearing. BROCKHOUSE & CO. Ltd., J. April 17, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1479/60. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A hose reel 2 is rotatably mounted by bearings 31, 32 on a fixed hollow member 9 and is driven through reduction gearing comprising a sun gear 15, also rotatably mounted on the member 9, and a planet pinion 16 mounted on a shaft 18 which is supported by bearings 19, 20 within the reel 2 and may be locked relatively thereto in order to effect the drive. A chain sprocket 23 is secured to the sun gear 15 and is driven from an electric motor through chain gearing. The locking means comprises a ratchet-wheel 35 keyed to the shaft 18 and engageable by a pivoted pawl 36 integral with a cam 38 which is movable by a spring-pressed manually-operable lever 52. A pivoted lever 43 is engaged at one end by a tension-spring 46 which causes a roller 48, carried at the other end of the lever 43, to engage the cam 38. The lever 43 also carries a brake pad 51 adapted to engage a brake wheel 50 secured to the shaft 18 adjacent the ratchetwheel 35. In the condition shown in Fig. 5, the cam 38 prevents engagement of the brake pad 51 with the brake wheel 50 and the reel 2 can be driven clockwise by the motor for the purpose of winding the hose on the reel. For the purpose of winding by hand, the shaft 18 may be rotated in the opposite sense by a handle applied at its other end 22, the pawl 36 then ratcheting over the teeth of the wheel 35 and rotation of the sun-wheel 15 and sprocket-wheel 23 being prevented by a spring-pressed catch 55, Fig. 7, engaging an aperture 53 in the side of the sprocket-wheel 23. Unwinding of the hose is effected by pulling it from the reel. For this purpose the pawl 36 is disengaged from the ratchet-wheel 35 and the brake 51 is applied to prevent over-running of the reel. A slipping clutch may be incorporated in the drive and the toothed gearing may be replaced by belt or chain gearing.
