Abstract
690,129. Hand turning-gear VILLIERS ENGINEERING CO., Ltd.. ANSTEY, F., and BLEWITT, L. J. EDIS-. Oct. 18, 1951 [Oct. 19, 1950], No. 25427/50. Class 7 (v). In a hand-operated engine starting device employing a pulley 14, loaded by a spring 18, and a rope 15 and comprising a toothed pinion 13. attached to the pulley, an engine starting pinion 28 and an intermediate spur gear, such as gears 20, 23 or a single composite wheel, not shown, which is permanently in mesh with the pulley pinion 13 and affords a driving connection between the latter and pinion 28 during starting, the intermediate spur gear is provided with a gap in its toothed periphery so that when the engine is stationary or normally operating the starting pinion 28 can rotate freely with the engine shaft 29. To start the engine the rope 15 is pulled thereby rotating pinion 13, the latter transmitting its rotation to wheels 21. 23 to crank the engine, the wheel 23 turning a small angular distance before the gap in its periphery has moved far enough to permit the toothed portion thereof to mesh with pinion 28. When the engine starts in the correct direction a ratchet 32 upon shaft 29 overruns teeth 31 on pinion 28 and allows the starting pinion 28, wheels 21, 23 and pinion 13 to rotate in the reverse direction under the action of spring 18 to rewind the rope 15. The return rotation is limited by a stop to ensure the second spur wheel 23 comes to rest with the gap in its periphery opposite the starting pinion; the handle on the rope, which is outside the starter casing 10, will also act as a stop for the pulley 14 when it engages the casing 10. If the engine backfires on starting it rotates in the same direction as the spring and so returns the device to the inoperative position whereupon the engine can continue to run in reverse without damaging the device.
