859,313. Hand tools. ELWELL Ltd., E. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 1, 1957], No. 30734/57. Class 6(2). A hand tool such as a shovel, spade, fork, hoe or rake comprises a tubular steel shaft 1, and a work head 2 provided with a shank 5, the free end 6 of the shank being reduced to fit into the lower end of the shaft, and the two members being welded together at 7. The forked handle 8 of the tool may either be provided with a spigot 9 for fitting into the upper end of the shaft, or the spigot may be replaced by a socket for fitting over the tubular shaft, the joint between the two members being welded in both cases, or alternatively the upper end of the shaft may be split in half and the two halves forced apart to form forked supports for the grip 3.
