Abstract

859,166. Releasable fastenings. JOHNSTON, J. R. Feb. 2,1959, No. 3575/59. Class 44. A connector for releasably securing together two or more elements 12, 13, for example, the ends of a necklace or the parts of a guy wire, cable or chain, comprises a pair of assemblies 14, 15 adapted to engage each other and to be locked in the engaged position by a spring operated sleeve 29, disengagement being assisted by a spring-urged bias member 36. The assembly 14 consists of two-part cylindrical receptacle sections 18, 19 joined at one end to provide a hoop 16 to which the element 12 is fastened. The opposite ends of the sections 18, 19 are formed into part spherical jaws 23, 24, which are closed by the sliding action of the sleeve 29 surrounding them, an end member 32 acting as a spring retainer and also aligning the sections 18, 19 within the sleeve. The assembly 15 comprises a member having a spherical end 26 adapted to mate with the jaws 23, 24 of assembly 14, the opposite end being formed into an eyelet 17 to take the other element 13 to be releasably connected. To facilitate easy disconnection when the sleeve 29 is slid back from the jaws 23, 24 against the pressure of a spring 31 the bias member 36 which has a tapered portion 39 is urged forward by its spring 37 to eject the ball member from the jaws 23, 24 as the sleeve surrounding the receptacle members is withdrawn. In a modification, Fig. 4, the assemblies 14a, 15a are of substantially rectangular section and the receptacle sections 18a, 19a are separate items secured at one end by a spring 45, the ends of the sections 18a, 19a being shaped to allow the jaws to open without binding. In a further modification, Fig. 6, (not shown) particularly adapted to be housed within and form a continuation of a decorative sleeve, the decorative sleeve perfoms the same function as the sleeve 29 of the connector shown in Fig. 1.
