Abstract

859,057. Insulating aircraft. BAXTER, WOODHOUSE & TAYLOR Ltd. Dec. 15, 1958 [Dec. 14, 1957], No. 38944/57. Class 4. An aircraft fuselage comprising frames 1 and stringers 2 is provided with composite insulating and ventilating units constructed individually and arranged; in vertically adjoining relationship against the structure to which they are secured by cords 19. The units are arranged in vertically adjoining pairs arranged side-by-side along the length of the fuselage and the upper unit of each pair, as shown in section in Fig. 3, comprises an outer layer of glass fibre 7 encased in a P.V.C. coated fabric skin 8 which is attached to a panel 10 of similar coated fabric which, with pillars 11 of encased foamed plastic and a panel 12 secured to panel 10 by fabric strips 6, form a duct 5 which connects at its upper end with a longitudinal air trunk (not shown). The lower unit of each pair, Fig. 6, comprises a part 21 of sound insulating material, e.g. glass fibre, and three laterally spaced ducts 23, 24 formed by pillars 27 of encased foamed plastic and a closing panel 28, the central pillars 27 stopping short of the base of the unit so that the three ducts are in communication. The upper end of the central duct 23 telescopes on to or into the duct 5 of the upper unit and at its lower end it has a tubular extension to an under-floor compartment of the fueslage. The lateral extremities of the upper and lower units are provided respectively with lacing eyelets 17 and 29 by means of which the units are secured by the cords 19 to strips 18 attached to frames 1. Air from the longitudinal air trunk is fed to each duct 5 and thence down through duct 23 and up through ducts 24 to emerge into the fuselage through outlet nozzles 25. It is stated that the ducts may be adjacent the fuselage wall with the sound insulating panels forming the interior faces of the units or the ducts may be formed integrally within the insulating panels. The sound insulating panels 7 and 21 may be formed with shaped recesses to accommodate structural members 1 and 2.
