Abstract
858,897. Centrifugal apparatus. JOY MANUFACTURING CO Jan. 22, 1957 [March 15, 1956], No. 2255/57. Class 23 [Also in Group XII] In apparatus wherein a gas containing foreign particles, e.g. air containing dust, is wetted with a liquid, e.g. water (see Group XII), the wetted foreign particles and surplus liquid are subsequently removed in a centrifugal separator. As shown in Figs. 4a and 4b which together show the complete apparatus air containing dust is wetted with water in a device 20 and passes to the space between a core 32 and the casing 11, a rotary movement being given to the air by stationary vanes 46 whereby water, with wetted foreign particles, is separated from the air stream centrifugally. To prevent water from adhering to the core 32, the stationary nose part 30 is followed by a rotating part which is journalled at 36, 40 and is driven by vanes 48 which make an angle of from 3 to 7 degrees to the direction of flow imposed upon the air by the stationary vanes 46 which latter support the nose part 30 from the casing 11. The water is collected in a series of annular spaces 50, 52, 54 to which access is afforded by passages 62, 64, 66 between sections of the easing 11, a drain 80 and suction pump 81 being provided. Water which fails to reach the spaces 50, 52, 54 is mostly contained in the outer layers of the rotating air, and these layers are stripped off into the opening 110 between a. cylindrical member 98 and a frusto-conical wall 100 having apertures 115, 117, 119 leading to water-collecting spaces 90. The strippedoff air passes through an annular passage 112 to rejoin the main stream, but the increasing cross-section between the members 98, 100 leads to a decrease in air velocity and deposition of water on the outside of the member 110, this water and the water from the spaces 90 passing to the drain 80. Apertured partitions 104, 106, 108 tend to project the water through the apertures 115, 117, 119. The air flow is straightened by vanes 130 before passing to the fan. In a modification, the diverging space between the members 98, 100 is occupied by a helical ribbon which promotes the centrifugal removal of water from the stripped-off air. In a further modification, the diverging space eliminator is omitted, and a section of the casing 11 is arranged to rotate with the core 32 so that the centrifugal effect is amplified at the last stage of water removal. With an appropriate alternation of drainage means, the apparatus may be arranged in in vertical or inclined position instead of in a horizontal position.
