Class 123(1) The method of treating water to prevent scale deposition by passing it through a magnetic field described in the parent specification is improved in that the intensity of the field is increased by inserting an element of paramagnetic material between adjacent pole pieces. As shown in Fig. 1 a rod 8 of paramagnetic material is positioned between the poles N, S of magnets 1, 2 to give two restricted passages traversed by an intense field through which the water flows outwardly. Figures 6 and 7 show a treating apparatus for insertion in a pipe line. Water entering at F flows outwardly between the poles of magnets 9 and paramagnetic rods 8 and discharges at F<SP>11</SP>.
