1353316 Treating seeds to increase speed of germination R D AMBURN 4 July 1972 36158/73 Divided out of 1349835 Addition to 1271545 Heading A2Q In apparatus for subjecting seeds to a magnetic field to improve their germination the seeds are supplied from a hopper 208 with an adjustable metering member 216 to the upper end of a non-magnetic tube 204 which is surrounded by electromagnet windings E and provided internally with a series of diametrically disposed, non-magnetic rods a....n so arranged that each rod is angularly displaced about the tube axis by about 45‹ relatively to adjacent rods whereby the seeds are caused to roll and tumble as they fall through the magnetic field. The field strength varies from about 110 gauss at a point x to about 75 gauss at point z, and it is stated that the treatment appears to be more effective if the N. pole of the magnet is lowermost.
