858,451. Liquid-level indicators. LAMB PUBLICATIONS & INVENTIONS Ltd., J. March 13, 1959, No. 8743/59. Addition to 848,988. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXV] A float member, for use with liquid-level indicating apparatus as described in the parent Specification so as to be readily transportable with the apparatus from tank to tank, comprises a sheet metal cylindrical float 1 having a conical head 2 and a vertical pair of sinuous slots 4 which are formed in opposite side-wall flats 3 and behind each of which is secured a channel 5 which is sealed from the interior of the float and receives a guide wire 9. The apparatus and the float 1, with a protective cylinder 13 secured to a closure cap 14 for the casing of the apparatus, are removably mounted on an ullage stand pipe 6. The protective cylinder 13 has opposed, vertical, side-wall slots 15 which, before introduction of the float 1 and the cylinder 13 into the stand pipe are aligned with the sinuous slots 4 in the float to receive, as the float and cylinder 13 are lowered into the stand pipe, a pair of inwardly directed studs 8 which are clamped to the upper end of the stand pipe 6 and support the guide wires 9. The latter are connected, at their lower ends, to weights 10 having recesses 11 which loosely receive the upturned ends of a cross-bar 12 secured to the bottom of the tank. The float 1 is vertically adjustable on a screw 22 carried by a member 16 for coupling the float 1 to a calibrated tape 7A so that compensation can be made when measuring the levels of liquids of varying specific gravity, an index mark being provided on the float to register with a scale 22A alongside one of the slots 15 in the protective cylinder 13. Means for locking the float during transportation comprises a block 23 which is slidable in a groove 24 in the closure cap 14 and is operable by a rod 25 which projects through the casing of the apparatus 7, Fig. 1 (not shown). A key-hole slot 26 in the block 23 has a cylindrical part and a slotted part which is recessed at 27 and when these parts are positioned below the coupling member they respectively permit and block the passage of the member 16 through the block. In the blocking position the recesses 27 engage beneath shoulders 18 on the coupling member 16.
