Abstract
Potassium-sodium-niobate ceramic material having an empirical formula in the range from K0.9Na0.1(NbO3) to K0.1Na0.9(NbO3), is obtained by mixing sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate and niobium pentoxide in proportions such that the molecular ratio of niobium pentoxide to the sum of the moles of potassium carbonate and sodium carbonate is unity and the ratio of the moles of the sodium carbonate to the moles of potassium carbonate corresponds to the ratio of the moles of sodium to the moles of potassium in the ceramic being produced, calcining the mixture at 750 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C., moulding the calcined material into a shape for use in a piezoelectric device, and firing the shape at 1030 DEG C. to 1305 DEG C. The components are mixed in a ball mill, dried, crushed to remove large particles, calcined in an oxidising atmosphere for eight to sixteen hours, and the calcined material is crushed, screened to remove large particles, leached with hot aqueous potassium carbonate, washed in hot water, dried, crushed, screened again, moulded under pressure using an organic binder if desired, and fired in an oxidising atmosphere. The ceramic element is fitted with electrodes and polarized at 200 DEG C. in an oil bath. In an example a ceramic is prepared corresponding to the formula K0.5Na0.5(NbO3).
