A device for obviating twisting of binding metal being fed to a package tying machine of the kind in which the metal is looped about the package by a rotating ring, comprises a coil holder 14 rotatably mounted on a shaft 5, the shaft being driven from the tying machine and having secured on it a driving arm 12. The arm 12 is connected to one end of a V-belt 16 passing round a pulley 15 fixed to the holder and is joined to a tension arm 13. The arm 13 pivots freely on the shaft 5 and is connected to the arm 12 by a spring 17, the latter tightening the belt about the pulley and thus forming a driving connection between the arm 12 and the holder 14. The arm 13 has a counterweight 18 against which abuts an adjustable stop 19 to limit relative movement of the two arms. The drive to the shaft 5 includes a pin and part annular groove type lost motion connection between the shaft and a driving sprocket 8, Fig. 3 (not shown). When there is no demand for binding metal the holder and shaft are connected and the whole assembly rotates in unison with the tying ring. When metal is drawn off, the arm 13 is displaced by the tension relative to the arm 12 to slacken the belt and enable the holder to unwind its coil. The lost motion arrangement permits the assembly to move independently of the tying machine drive through a limited angle to take account of sudden demands for metal.
