Abstract
857,379. Pneumatic tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Aug. 11, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 27395/59. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre providing quiet and soft ride characteristics has at least its tread portion comprised of a heterogeneous blend of at least two polymeric materials, one of which has a stiffening temperature in the range - 30‹ C. to 15‹ C. and at least 20‹ C. higher than that of another of the polymeric materials. The stiffening temperature-is defined as that corresponding to the inflection point of the curve derived in accordance with ASTM test method D-1053-54T. Curve 23, Fig. 10, shows that obtained for a 50/50 heterogeneous blend of two polymers represented respectively by curves 21 and 24. The preferred constituents of the blend comprise a "rubbery" copolymer of a conjugated diene monomer such as butadiene-1,3, and a vinyl aromatic monomer such as styrene, and a " resinous, " copolymer of 38 to 68 parts of butadiene and 62 parts to 32 parts of styrene. The blend may comprise 20 to 80 parts of the " resinous " polymer per 100 parts of the blend, and may be compounded with 10 parts of rubber compatible oil per 100 parts of the total polymer. Curve 22 shows the effect of adding such oil to the blend of curve 23. In mixing the blend, carbon black and the usual compounding and vulcanizing agents may be added. The Specification contains lists of suitable " rubbery " and " resinous " polymers for use in preparing a heterogeneous blend. Specification 565,974 is referred to.
