Abstract

Linear polyoxalates, suitable for the manufacture of filaments, are made by heating an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic diester of oxalic acid with a bis-b -hydroxyethyl ether of an aromatic dihydroxy compound, which dihydroxy compound has a melting point of at least 232 DEG C. Specified bis-b -hydroxyethyl ethers are those of 4-41-dihydroxydiphenyl, 1, 5-dihydroxynaphthalene and 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrachlorohydroquinone and they may be used in admixture with other dihydroxy compounds, such as resorcinol, pyrocatechol, 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene, o-, m- or p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, butanediol-1: 4, quinital and o-, m-, and p-xylylene glycol. Reaction may be effected in the presence of a basic trans-esterification catalyst (many specified) which may be neutralised at the end of the reaction by a volatile base-fixing substance (e.g. dimethyl sulphate).
